A few more 1.5:1 off-the-shelf snack unicorns

Updated: Sep 12, 2020

We're of course going to put everything we've got toward the new 2:1 ratio for M, but I can't help but be a little disappointed that literally days before that appointment I had just found a bunch of good nut-free 1.5:1 snack options at Trader Joe's. It makes life out and about so much easier to have kid-friendly ratio-complete snacks. But no matter! I'll find some 2:1 options and in the meantime, if 1.5:1 is still useful to you, here's my list.

Crispy Crunchy Broccoli Florets: They're broccoli florets flash-fried in salt and oil, which makes them crunchy, salty, and high in fat. They've got a ton of fiber too, so the ratio works out. M seems to like them a lot and I am generally in favor of any chance to get veggies into him in any form, so I like these. I should say that looking at the labels of the ones currently sold in stores, these were comfortably at ratio (I calculated 1.8:1 but I can't find a label online that matches that). It looks like the nutrition info has changed over the years as their suppliers change - this is A Thing with Trader Joe's, so always be on the lookout for that - so if you look at the labels on Amazon or other sites, they have older numbers that work out lower than 1.5:1. I am reasonably sure that all sold now are accurate for the newer information, but do double-check.

Roasted Seaweed Snacks: Just sheets of roasted seaweed in sesame oil. They're light and crunchy and pure salt and umami flavor. Both my kids have always loved these, so it's awesome that they're also 1.5:1.

Roasted Salted Sunflower Seeds: in lieu of nuts, seeds are a good alternative. These are 1.5:1 out of the box and give little kids the salty/crunchy sensation crackers used to. As far as seeds go - lots of places sell these, as well as roasted salted pumpkin seed kernels, which I've also used as a 1.5:1 snack. But they're not all created equal; I've found these Trader Joe's sunflower seeds and a local grocery chain here sells bags of pumpkin seeds that are also 1.5:1, but it depends on how they're prepared so you always need to check the labels.
